Boy, 16, killed in Qalandiya raid
Israeli forces shot dead a 16-year-old boy and trapped a Palestinian family in a car with a stun grenade during the same Qalandiya raid.
Israeli forces shot dead a 16-year-old Palestinian boy and trapped a family inside their car with a stun grenade during the same raid on the Qalandiya refugee camp on Sunday.
The raid
Walid Nidal Abu Suneina, 16, died after Israeli forces opened fire during the operation in Qalandiya, on the northern edge of occupied East Jerusalem. Two other Palestinian children were shot in the legs in the same raid, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health. Troops sealed the camp’s entrances, moved through its streets and fired live rounds, tear gas and stun grenades. In a parallel raid on the neighbouring town of Kafr Aqab, three young men were detained.
Trapped in the car
During the same operation, a Border Police officer was filmed throwing a stun grenade into a car carrying Palestinians and holding the door shut so the occupants could not get out before it detonated. On the footage, the officer is heard telling the driver: “Shut your mouth, who are you talking to like that?” The people trapped inside have not yet been named.
Local reporting places the stun-grenade attack inside the same raid that killed Abu Suneina. Israel Police’s own account treats the grenade as a standalone matter, separated from the killing that was under way streets away.
An investigation that investigates itself
Israel Police said the officer had acted “not in accordance with our policies” and referred the case to the Justice Ministry’s Police Internal Investigations Department. That same department examined a fatal police shooting in Qalandiya in 2024, and a separate case in which a Palestinian lost an eye to a police stun grenade. Neither resulted in a prosecution.
Twenty children have been killed by Israeli forces in the West Bank so far in 2026, out of 75 Palestinians killed there in total, eight of them in the Jerusalem district alone, according to figures compiled by the International Middle East Media Center.
A boy is dead. A family was locked inside a car with an explosive charge going off next to them. The unit that did it will investigate itself, and its own record says what it will find: nothing.
