Kill-chain software with 10% error rate now arms British Army

The British Army has wired an infantry battalion into a US billionaire's AI targeting system, the same company already selling surveillance towers against migrants in the Channel.

The British Army has spent the summer trialling British Army Anduril drones built around what the company itself calls a “kill chain”: a software pipeline that finds a target, decides it is a target, and sends a munition to destroy it, with a human signing off somewhere in the sequence. An entire infantry battalion, 3rd Battalion The Rifles, has been redesignated a “Near Surface Infantry Battalion” and rebuilt around the kit.

In June, the battalion took Anduril’s Ghost-X reconnaissance drone and Bolt-M loitering munition to Exercise Northern Star in Finland, 43 miles from the Russian border, and ran a live “sensor-to-strike chain” in front of roughly 4,500 NATO troops. The Ghost-X finds and identifies a target and passes the data to a command post; an operator validates it; the Bolt-M receives the coordinates and destroys itself on impact. The whole system runs on Anduril’s Lattice software, now installed on British screens, which the company says exists to “accelerate the closing of complex kill chains” at what it calls machine speed rather than human speed.

British army Anduril drones and who they’re built to hunt This is not an abstract capability. Software built to compress the gap between identifying a person and killing them has already been used at scale, and the record of what happens when the human step gets thin is public. Investigative reporting by +972 Magazine found that the Israeli military’s “Lavender” system generated a list of up to 37,000 Palestinians in Gaza marked as targets, with an error rate its own operators estimated at around 10%, and that officers reviewing each name were typically giving it roughly 20 seconds before signing off. Most of the people killed in the strikes that followed were, in +972’s reporting, women and children or people not involved in the fighting. A parallel system nicknamed “Where’s Daddy?” was used to track targets to their family homes so they could be struck there.

Anduril did not build Lavender. But the company’s founder, Palmer Luckey, describes himself as a “radical Zionist” and made a secret two-day visit to Israel in February, meeting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and senior defence officials to discuss an Israeli factory and local research and development, according to Haaretz. A UN report last year named Anduril’s own commercial partners, Palantir and Microsoft, as suppliers of surveillance and cloud infrastructure used by the Israeli military in Gaza and the West Bank. The software culture the British Army has just bought into did not emerge in a vacuum. It emerged downstream of a war in which an algorithm’s shortlist and a soldier’s rubber stamp between them decided who lived.

Same firm, closer to home

The Home Office has already paid Anduril £16m for AI-powered “Sentry” surveillance towers to track small boats crossing the Channel, part of at least £62m in UK government contracts awarded to the company since 2021. That figure includes £6.7m for Ghost drones, a £30m contract signed in March last year, a further £30m to supply Anduril drones to Ukraine, and a £17m Ministry of Defence force protection deal. In May, defence minister Luke Pollard announced Anduril would share £10m in development funding to build autonomous “wingman” drones for the Army’s Apache helicopters.

Migrants crossing the Channel and Palestinians in Gaza are not incidental footnotes to a British procurement story. They are the two populations who have already met this company’s products on the receiving end, one through a watchtower, the other through the wider AI-targeting culture its founder has moved toward. The British Army is now the third customer in that line.

The revolving door

Anduril did not arrive in Whitehall by chance. The Bureau of Investigative Journalism found the company sought a minister’s advice on how a US arms firm could look “sufficiently British” to win UK contracts, met then-investment minister Lord Dominic Johnson at the Old Admiralty Building, hired a London PR firm and joined trade associations to build access. Air Vice-Marshal David Arthurton left his post as the MoD’s director of strategy and digitisation in August 2024 and is now Anduril’s UK managing director. At least eleven other former MoD staff have joined the company. A former Whitehall official spent years deciding how the department would digitise itself, then went to work for the firm selling it the answer.

Anduril UK’s chief executive, Rich Drake, has been open about what the software is for. “The beauty of software like Lattice means we can integrate those natively and speeding up decision cycles in what we call kill chains, again, to help the Army become more lethal,” he said in April. Major Steve Watts, the exercise’s conducting officer, described the same system in terms of British survivability: it lets troops “make decisions faster and kill targets farther away, while increasing survivability.” The Army’s own target is to double its lethality by 2027 and triple it by 2030, with Lattice named as a central enabler.

The counter-case, and why it doesn’t hold

The fair objection is that Ghost-X and Bolt-M in Finland are not Lavender in Gaza, that a human operator validates each strike, and that a NATO exercise near the Russian border is a reasonable response to a real threat. All true, as far as it goes. But the entire commercial pitch behind Lattice is to shrink the human validation step that Lavender showed can already collapse to a 20-second glance, and the company selling it to the British Army is run by a man who has spent the past year courting the government whose own AI targeting produced that outcome. The safeguard being relied on is precisely the one the precedent shows fails first.

The United Nations Secretary-General has called for a treaty by 2026 banning weapons that operate without human control and cannot comply with international humanitarian law, a position backed by a UN General Assembly resolution that passed 166 to 3. Britain is not negotiating that treaty. It is buying the technology the treaty is meant to restrain, from the man who calls himself a radical Zionist and just spent two days in Netanyahu’s office, and putting it on a screen at an Army base in Wiltshire.
